Weekend Rugby Report: Shock Results and Breaking Team News

Rugby Union

There were some big results in the club competitions this weekend. Sale Sharks got a solid win over Saracens, finishing 25–7 on Friday night. Over in the United Rugby Championship, Cardiff Rugby just managed to get past Munster, 26–21. The Bulls also pulled off a win away at Glasgow, and Zebre and Edinburgh ended up with a 25-all draw.

In Super Rugby, the Chiefs really ran away with it against the Western Force, scoring 56 points. The Queensland Reds had a tighter game but still came out on top against the Blues.

Meanwhile, Connacht Rugby have made a few changes to their squad for the upcoming match against the Lions. Shayne Bolton is back from injury, which is good news for them. Hugh Gavin and Eoin de Buitléar are also returning and will be available from the bench.

Rugby League
In England’s Super League, Hull Kingston Rovers got the win over Leeds Rhinos on Friday, finishing 20–14. Over in Australia’s NRL, the Sydney Roosters had a big game, beating St. George Illawarra 46–18. The New Zealand Warriors also came out on top, 26–12 against Newcastle, and Melbourne Storm held off South Sydney, 24–16.

On the team news side, the Brisbane Broncos will be missing Reece Walsh for a while because of a knee injury. Selwyn Cobbo is stepping in at fullback. There were a couple of other updates too—Brendan Piakura is back from suspension for Brisbane, and Jack Todd from the Bulldogs is out long term with a broken arm.

Rugby Sevens
World Rugby has decided to reduce the number of teams in the main HSBC Sevens Series from twelve to eight starting in 2026. This change will affect how teams qualify and move up or down in the international sevens competition.

On another note, the USA Women’s Sevens team has named its roster for the final tournament of the season in Los Angeles. Ashley Cowdrey will be making her first appearance with the team, and Kristi Kirshe will continue to lead as captain. Unfortunately, Spiff Sedrick will not be able to play in LA after injuring her knee during the last tour.
